I grew up in Eastern Washington in Richland. My dad worked at the Hanford Atomic Works in construction. I graduated from Richland High School, and from Gonzaga University in Spokane. After graduation, I returned to school to get my teaching certificate, and moved to Seattle where I got a teaching job.
I retired from teaching after 39 years. The last six years were spent as an officer of my local union. During my career I taught a wide range of subjects and levels. I started my career as a High School teacher in French, and English Language Arts. After ten years of that I worked in Special Education for Emotionally Disturbed high school kids, then worked as a teacher of the Hearing Impaired. I moved to a Junior High in my twelfth year of teaching, and I finished my career as a Social Studies teacher in the sixth grade.
I still live in Seattle in a house that recently had its one hundredth birthday. I share the house with my Schnauzer, Cameron. I am a member of Saint Patrick's Church where I am the coordinator of interpreters for the Deaf. Since my retirement, I have been doing a lot of volunteer work at the church.
When I was about 17, I began discovering my sexual identity as a Gay male. This caused quite a deal of conflict with my Catholic upbringing. After twenty years of struggle with being Gay and Catholic, I finally realized that the homophobia I was experiencing was coming from people, not God, and that I could seek God in my way without worrying about what people thought. Getting to this point was not easy. The community that I worship with now is supportive and Gay friendly. They supported me through the illness and death of my last partner in 1996. I have been single since then.
